I thought I'd start on this. It seems to me, by opinons expressed on other forums, that Peter Kay has become a little bit unpopular. This could be beacuse he's done nothing proper for a few years, but you can't blame him. After all, he needs time to spend the £4.5m he made on his bungalow tour. That said though, he has been cashing in just a bit as well from his old stuff. The biggest rip-off for me was him bringing the Manchester show out on VD (which I now refuse to buy) With bonus features on it, that should have gone on the Bolton Albert hall one! + the Manchester show is only 45 minutes! Considering most of us on here saw the Bungalow tour live, it was actually a two hour show, with only 70 odd minutes released on VD. It's so wrong. At least with the likes of 'Lee Evans' you get the entire show!

He's on Jonathan Woss this Fwiday (16th June) And then it's his Doctor Who episode (17th June)
Now there's a coincidence!

Once great standup and all round funny man, now a sad parody of his former self, overtaken by greed and a sense of his own self importance. Phoenix Nights seems a long time ago now

Yep - no time for him now. "Up his own arse" is what I reckon given his 'chummy and cheeky' appearances on guest shows... a big fat lad we're all no longer 'taking a shine to'!
Mind you - Brian Potter is a classic characterisation and worthy of comparing to some of the greats including Captain Mainwaring... as a HUGE 'Dad's' fan I don't say that lightly either.
And his character 'Leonard' - excellent.
But his stand-up seems like cack now, with little truisms, malapropisms and other 'northern tackle' that's become tiresome.
If he jack's in the stand-up and does some decent characterisations again I'll be happy.
As to Doctor Who... I've been enjoying the series -I hope he doesn't spoil the episode!

I noticed on the Doctor Who trailer for the Peter Kay episode, he had a bleach blonde little goatee.... Simon Pegg had one of those last series when he played the 'editor'.
And he seemed to be talking in Marc Park's voice. My least popular character. He's just not funny.
Love Leonard though. He should do more with him..
"Are you avvin' that one!"

I've always felt that Peter Kay was at his best when supported by the equally prodigious writing talents of Neil Fitzmaurice and Dave Spikey. PN and TPKT were genius. Everything else he's done has fluctuated between the merely good (Live at the Top of the Tower), the self indulgent (Live at the Albert Halls, Corrie) and the utterly dreadful (Max & Paddy).
Maybe if I was in his position I would also milk it for all it's worth, but the general feeling as that the influence of his manager (Phil McIntyre, producers of many a successful comedy) is a bad influence, guiding him in the direction of the bank rather than artistic integrity.
Peter Kay is without doubt a great comic actor - but to bring out the best of his talents he needs decent scripts, something he doesn't seem able to produce away from Neil and Dave.

You could be right there, about the management side of things. They aren't furthering his career that much, and yes he does seem to be lost without the input of Spikey & Fitzmaurice. It just goes to show what teamwork can achieve. They should all get back together and get cracking on either another series of 'Phoenix Nights'. Dave Spikey mentioned once the thing about only doing two series', but I don't believe in that. If the writing is good, they can go with it for ages, look at the likes of 'Last of The Summer Wine' & 'Only Fools & Horses'! I'd love to see a 'Phoenix Nights' special at least. Their version of 'The Jolly Boys Outing' could work well as an idea!

PK has said he'll probably do PN3 - but without Spikey and Fitzmaurice. Would almost certainly be a disaster.

It just wouldn't work. You can almost spot what contribution Dave Spikey makes in PN, by how he wrote 'Dead Man Weds', which I believe got a better reception compared to Road To Nowhere.

Dead Man Weds was class. Unfortunately it was commissioned by ITV, which the virtual kiss of death for any comedy these days

You're right there, sadly... And there's no signs of the VD coming out! Dave Spikey's currently producing a pilot called 'Magnolia', as part of a series for the BBC. Similar to the 'Comedy Playhouse' stuff. Hope that goes well for him!

Dead Man was okay... had some very good one-liners in there and some good actors.
Better than "Road to P.K.s Wallet" any day!
