That's all I can stand. I can't stand no more.
Make room for one of the best American shows ever...
Hawkeye: What are you, kidding? This schlock?
BJ: What are you talking about!? It's funny.... since I showed up....

This is one of those shows I both love and hate. I'd say "love" more than not, 'cause gawd knows I've watched it enough. I realized fairly recently that I know this show about as well as I know classic Star Trek. I think the "hate" part comes from A) Hawkeye being made chief surgeon, not Trapper (as in the movie) and B) Alda getting too high and mighty and using the show as a vehicle to pontificate as the series wore on.
Other than those two things, I love the show, especially the Charles years. I love Trapper, but sadly he was only in the first three seasons.
Far too many brilliant moments in this show to reiterate here, so I'll mention two of my favorite recurring characters, especially when they appear in the same ep: Colonel Flagg and Sidney Freedman.
The show jumped the shark with "Comrades in Arms." I refuse to watch that episode. Once was too often.
L'Adder Noir, I hate to admit this, but I've got no idea which episode the above image is from. Or was it Alda and Farrell just messing around on the "set"?

Can't believe I've not mentioned this show, A classic!, I agree with Conrad on the Alda getting a bit stuck up his own importance as the show went on tho'
Only currently got seasons 1-4 on DVD so far (and film)

I have to disagree. We have bantered about this before Conrad* on other boards. I don't think M*A*S*H would have been nearly as popular without Alan Alda. I won't say he's the only talented actor on the show, or even most talented. But he really made that show what it was.
He's to M*A*S*H as William Shatner was to Trek. Sure, Nimoy and the rest rocked and kicked bottom... same with M*A*S*H.
I also think that they did a great job giving character development to many of the other characters, not just him. Even more minor characters like Nurse Kelly or the father and Klinger. In fact, characters like that, who were marginal in the beginning, were developed a lot more in proportion to Alda. To go from the guy wearing a skirt in one scene to being one of the top stars... But Alda was always first name, main star. To say he was emphasized too much is missing the point of what a top billing star does.
If anything, the final shows, where he goes insane, are brilliant. If it was just a Hawkeye is godlike, he would have got through the war completely sane. I like that it finally hit him - and not just that he was a saintlike critic or the voice of reason. I like that it hit him to the point where his life was ruined - more than some of the other characters.
Now, just so you know where I am coming from here, I tend to prefer the series once Potter and BJ show up. Although I love the comedy of the show, the earlier years are sometimes a bit too silly. I actually didn't like the Movie for that same reason.
BJ rocks over Trapper for so many reasons. Even before the cheezy mustache. What skeeved me out about Trapper (and I can't get past it) was that he was a married man doing what he did. Sure, people do it a lot in war, but that still doesn't mean I found it humorous. Both Trapper and Blake skeeved me out for that reason. I like that they brought in Potter and BJ to counter that. It became more tragic to see families separated, rather than people sh*gging their hearts out in desparation.
I know you love Charles, but he's not my fave. I've known to many snobs from Harvard. Again, finger down throat. Great character, and DOS is a master at it... I do like what they eventually did with that character - made him a bit more humble, which was necessary. I think he brought nice balance.
I must say that the best character development, however, was Klinger. He went from the guy in the wedding dress to a really good character, with a lot of soul and heart. Plus, he had some of the best lines in the series (That I quote on a daily basis)
My favorite Klingerism....
As for that screen cap? Who knows. Pulled it off a mysterious site in cyberia.
*for the moment, but BW by any other name!

I didn't mean to imply I DISlike Hawkeye. I've busted a gut over many of his lines. One favorite, from "Mr and Mrs Who?," when Charles returns, quite hung over, from Tokyo. BJ and Hawkeye start picking through his bags, and Hawkeye pulls out two black stockings, and says, "Oh, sure, bring back the empties!"
So many other great lines from Hawkeye, didn't want L'Adder Noir (a true Hawkeye fan) to think I was dissing him.
Speaking of Hawkeye, most of you folks reading this know he was played by Donald Sutherland in the movie, right?
One of my favorite Klinger lines: "May your camel spit nothing but dates."

I loved M*A*S*H*! If you've never seen the out takes reels then you haven't really laughed. You do know the the show lasted about three times longer than the actual war. Still it was a classic. I must say though that I have never liked the finale. It felt very rushed and kind of throwen together. My favorite character is Klinger, with Hawkeye a close second. When Wayne Rogers left the show and they brought in someone else to play opposite Alda I had my misgivings, but Mike Farrell was great. Harry Morgan as Potter was the perfect choice too. That show made me laugh till my sides hurt and cry like I would never stop.

My favorite character is Klinger, with Hawkeye a close second. For me it's Hawkeye, then Klinger...
I must admit, I still use some of Klinger's classic one-liners today.
"May the camel of life give birth in your sleeping bag!"
