I thought someone would've beaten me to this one by now. Started as a one-off episode (The Offer) in the BBC's Comedy Playhouse series then went on to become one of the greatest sitcoms ever made, and two of television's finest characters. Ever paused the 'Scrabble' board on 'Men of Letters'? No.... Here you are.... "Zat's Disgastin'!"

I have indeed - but that's first time I've seen a screenshot of it! "My bum's not derr-tee!" etc. Classic! My all time favourite is "Divided We Stand" N.

Harold: [trying to convince Albert to change the channel of the partitioned TV set] We had an agreement, we shook hands. I have got the law of contract on my side. Albert: I have the knobs on my side!(did the scrabble screenshot from best of VD!)

"Blood of the ripper... that's more like it!"
"This is 3-pin BBC radio plug..."
"Here... checkpoint Charlie"
"Cobblers" "And the same to you" "Cobb-lurrs!" "Make a very fine stew!"

Never really enjoyed this one. Corbett's awful cockney accent put me off. And I found old man Steptoe repulsive (I know that wast he point, but even so).

I've just go the 1st three series of this now on DVD. Watched two episodes so far. It's interesting to see the early stuff. I'm more used to the later 'colour' episodes. Although there's not as much smutty stuff in it, the characters are exactly as they were in the later series. Harold has the ambition of moving away because of feeling trapped by his dad, who always puts on the 'emotional blackmail' act everytime Harold threatens to try and get some sort of life of his own...That's basically how Steptoe & Son was all the way through. There's a good scene in 'The Offer' where Harold's brought home a collection of 'almost empty' spirit bottles, which they get the dregs out of each one and top up their own supplies... And Albert wanting to keep all the 'best stuff' for himself that Harold had collected on his rounds. (i.e. a 2nd hand mattress) ALBERT: I'll have that for my bedGood Classic Stuff! Right, I'll watch some more in a bit!

Also - there's loads of 'cameos' in the shows... Jeys, how many episodes was Frank Thornton (a.k.a. Captain Peacock) in - and how many different roles did he do? ;D N.

He Turned up in everything!...I'd say his best Steptoe is in The Christmas episode when He's the travel agent....
Harold gives him a wad that he'd stored in his wellie...it's a bit stuck together...after rubbing it he pops his finger into his mouth to wet it...and finds something to his distaste...
