More drama than comedy in this series, but another classic none the less. it's most famous character being 'Yosser Hughes' (Graeme Souness lookalike) who went on to become the King in 'Lord of The Rings'! "Geeza job.... go on... geez it!"

Great series! Weird - I was thinking of starting a thread on this!
Got the lot on DVD including "The Blackstuff" one off or 'prequel' too.
My faves:
Yosser: "Help me Father - I'm desperate". Priest:"Call me Dan" Yosser: "Help me, I'm desperate Dan!"
;D
And of course: "Sheyk 'ands!"
;D

I've had it on DVD for a couple of years now too. It's weird though, how only the Yosser episode really stands out. There were other good stories in the series, but they didn't have the same humour as the Yosser!

Yep - they're all good - but it's probably all the comedy stuff you are remembering, and although one of the saddest (Yosser loses his kids) that particular episode has all the funny stuff in there such as the pub scenes, the bit with the tramp, some of the stuff with Social Services etc. etc. My wife bought 'em for me as a present and I watched them one after the other which was WELL depressing even though I enjoyed it (work that out) - but thank Gawd for the last episode! "Hiff Oi were a bleckberrrd - Hoys whiss-ul end seeeeng" etc. ;D Great stuff! You'll have to give GBH a mention next! N.

Especially that episode with Chrissie Wotsit (can't remember his surname), where he loses everthing and slaughters his pigeons, and that old bloke who keeps going walkabout in his pyjamas! I never watched GBH. I missed that one.

GBH had some corking bits in it... including one where the kid drives a car to help his Mam out... she cracks him and says: "I KNEW you'd been out nicking cars with that gang of yours!" "I didn't!" "Well how come you know how to drive then?" "We learnt it at school in metalwork!" ;D N.

Got the DVD set of this recently, was a bit disappointed as I don't think it's aged very well, the whole "it's grim up north" stuff was laid on thicker than the mortar in Yosser's attempt at being a brickie. Still some funny stuff though as you mentioned with Yosser and Shakes in particular
