Any one else remember this...? Sledge Hammer is a hilarious spoof on the tough rebel cop movies and dramas that were hitting their stride in the mid-eighties. Especially a take-off on "Dirty Harry," Detective Sledge Hammer was a tough talking, reflective sunglasses wearing hard-ass. He would shoot a jaywalker as readily as he would a fleeing escaped convict. And he seemed happy to do it. His best friend was his pearl handled, huge .44 Magnum that he named "Gun." Constantly suspended from the force, his case was usually solved and Hammer was redeemed by his woman cop partner. Sledge Hammer, and the way it satirized cop shows, has been frequently compared to "Get Smart" and the way it satirized the spy mania of its day. Producers even took the show for what it was, saying "What the show is about is a half hour."
