A few days ago I received a belated birthday card from the UK. It had a cheque in it for £20 sterling.
We take it to the bank on Tuesday. They tell us, unlike an American cheque, we can't simply cash it, it has to be deposited and stay in the bank overnight. Fair enough, we say. We're well chuffed that at the current exchange rate, we'll get $38 back for it. We make the deposit slip, sign the cheque and hand it over, and I ask, is there a fee for doing this? She definitively says no.
Wednesday morning, sure enough, $38 is credited to our bank account. We go off to the bank, withdraw that and the rest of the cash in the bank to go spending. We leave just a few cents in, reasoning that Friday is payday, and awkward as I am, I like the bank to be 'empty' if possible before a new paycheque goes in and I start paying bills etc out of it.
Thursday, I check the bank balance (as I do) expecting it to be the $0.66 we left in yesterday. I see instead, -$0.84, and a new entry, "Fee for Foreign Deposit, $1.50."
Since it's payday tomorrow and I'm expecting a reasonably large deposit, I'm not too worried - I can cover $0.84, but given we were told specifically, NO FEE, and as a result of the fee we're now overdrawn, I hope they don't stiff us with a $25 overdraft fee or something like that - if they do, they'd damn well better put it back, since it wasn't our fault.

I have some bad experiences with Banks. I had mailed a postdated check for a magazine subscription. I postdate it allow them time to process it. Day comes for the check to clear. Checked my account. The Bank had cleared the check for $75 when I had written it for $35. That meant another check was going to bounce. Called the bank asked WTF?? They looked into and told me they can fix it but it will take 5 business days to put my money back. So I borrowed money to cover my other cheque. They put the money back in about a week after. Next day they double the money!!!! I phone the bank again and ask how come they doubled the amount put back in my account. The guy on the phone told me Oh no that's your money. It wasen't though. This happened in the Spring. I am still waiting to see if they are going to take the extra money out of my account. So I can't write anymore cheques because I'm afraid of this happening again

Cheeky bleeders. Did they give you anything in writing stating 'No fee'? If not, it sounds like they've conned you.

No, they didn't, we just asked when we made the desposit and the woman at the desk told us no fee.
Been to check the bank this morning, and all was as it should be, which means basically we're only out $1.50 - no overdraft fees thank god.

That good news they didn't charge for the overdraft.

I suspect it was because yesterday they already knew this morning there was due to be an automated deposit more than big enough to cover the overdrawing. Either that, or they didn't do anything because it was less than a dollar.
Either way I'm glad.

Another that falls into this category is delivery drivers:
Expecting my new webcam from Logitech to be delivered by DHL - I signed up for their email tracking service so I could follow it's progress. Yesterday I got an email at 6:30am saying "With Delivery Courier." Great, I think, it'll be here later today. At 1:30pm I got an email saying, "Attempted delivery - Address Information Required - Call Customer service."
I call them, and get told that the driver attempted to deliver my package but that he's certain my address doesn't exist; he can't find me. This is because we're first floor apartments, and apparently all the driver did was check the ground floor, see a restaurant, and apparently decided no one in a restaurant would be ordering a webcam.
I give the phone woman crystal clear instructions on how to find me, but she tells me the driver has already left town and is on his way back to South Dakota; She promises it'll be delivered tomorrow (Friday).
It was delivered 20 mins ago, the driver making a funny "Found you at last!" comment. Out of curiosity, I ask where he went yesterday. He points to the stairs at the end of the hallway, saying, "Well I found those stairs right there, but I had no idea there were apartments up here, so I never bothered checking...."
So my parcel was 24 hrs late because the driver couldn't be bothered walking up a flight of steps!

Even if he was, they can get up the stairs these days, can't they? Been able to since 1987, I believe.
Besides, it wasn't that this bloke couldn't get up the stairs, he just couldn't be arsed to check up the stairs.
