OK OK Like with Stanley Holloway you are all probably thinking
Who the F***K are they.
They where actually a double act as you might have guessed and not a brand of Ciggerettes as the name sugests. They used to tour the Theaters of the British Isles putting on a performance of Monologues and Musical Comedy Numbers. In the same way as both Laurel & Hardy and Morecambe & Wise Michael Flanders & Donald Swan had a good relationship and they where able to play of each other very well.
Flanders & Swan performed their act in the 1940's and 50's in a world recovering from the horrors of the Second World War. They had a catch line for their shows they called the At The Drop Of A Hat and the follow on performance was called At The Drop Of Another Hat. The story of how they came up with this title was that they where asked how they came up the material to which they are said to have replied
"We have been doing it for so long we could literally come up with something at the drop of a hat."
They came up with numerous songs for example:-
A Transport Of Delight
The Gnu Song
The Hippopotamus Song
Sounding Brass
The Gas-Man Cometh
Out of all of the songs that I have heard of theirs my Personal Favorite has got to be The Gas-Man Cometh. This song is for anyone that has ever had one of those weeks where they feel as though nothing is going right and it goes something like this.
The Gas-Man Cometh
Twas on the Monday Morning
The Gas-Man came to call
The gas tap wouldn't turn
I wasn't getting gas at all
He tore out all the scerting boards
To try and find the main
And I had to call a Carpenter
To Put them back again
Oh It all makes work for the working man to do
Twas on the Tuesday Morning
The Carpenter came round
He hammered and chiseled and he said
Look what I have found
Your joists are full of dry-rot
But I'll put them all to rights
And he nailed right through a cable
And out went all the Lights
Oh It all makes work for the working man to do
Twas on a Wednesday Morning
The Electrician came
He called me Mr Sanderson
Which isn't quite my name
He couldn't reach the fuse-box
Without standing on the bin
And his foot went through a window
So I called a Glazier in
Oh It all makes work for the working man to do
Twas on the Thursday Morning
The Glazier came along
With his blowtorch and his putty
And his merry Glazier song
He put another pain in
It took no time at all
But I had to get a painter in
To come and paint the wall
Oh It all makes work for the working man to do
Twas on a Friday Morning
The Painter made a start
With undercoats and overcoats
He Painted every part
Every nook and every cranny
But I Found when he had gone
He'd painted over the gas tap
An I couldn't turn it on
Oh It all makes work for the working man to do
On Saturday & Sunday
They do no work at all
So it was on a Monday Morning
That the Gas-Man came to call
I Dont think you could class them a comedy double act in the true sence but what they had the ability to make people laugh wich is why I have chose to add them to Planet Comedy!!
