Did anyone watch this a coulple of years back?
Shown in a 'late slot' on ITV - Rob Brydon (the 'Marmite' of television - ye either love or hate him) narrating shows that his character so-called produced - some great stuff on there... here's a bit of info.
"A TV director on both sides of the Atlantic, Peter De Lane shares his recollections of the processes involved via the 'director's commentary' soundtrack on subsequent DVD releases. In so doing, as he rambles on about cunning camera angles and subtle working methods, the viewer begins to assemble a picture of De Lane as a conceited, self-centred, egotistic, misogynistic oaf.
With an innovative premise, gifted comedy performer and clever use of genuine archive material (from Bonanza, The Duchess Of Duke Street and Mr And Mrs), Directors Commentary could have been a top comedy show. As it was, it shone all too rarely. The primary fault was length: had it been a two- to three-minute recurring piece in a sketch show it might have been hailed as a miniature masterpiece, but as standalone half-hours the premise became tedious. This was a pity, because De Lane was an intriguing creation, and Brydon voiced the role well.
"
Generally it was a show of two halves... each being a different prog. that was commented on - I have to say, I was a particular fan.
One of my favourite lines was this...
[Country scene showing Morris Dancers]
"Morris Dancing... not any more though... now it's just Barry and Robin"
(For those who don't 'get it' - reference to a deceased Bee Gee).
;D
Top stuff - and you can get it pretty cheap off eBay brand new too!
