UPDATE
I went past the Beer Engine last night and the place was near enough in total darkness.
Zygon also went past a bit later, still the same. He also tried to ring them a couple of times tonight (during what should be opening hours), no reply!
It could be that after 14 year of using The Beer Engine for our monthly Laurel & Hardy meetings, we are now faced with the reality of finding a new venue.
If any of our Wigan members have any suggestions, please let us know. We would need somewhere more or less central to Wigan Town Centre.
Oh, and it has to be free!

I hope Morris st comes off myself. According to Chris, it's unavailable on Tuesdays & Wednesdays for monthly meeting but it has been pencilled in as the venue for next years Laurel & HarDay. Monthly meetings are undergoing a new approach. Bi-monthly meetings, (maybe on a different night) One month in St. H. the other in Wigan. Hopefully we can sort something soon and get a Christmas meeting. By the way, I went to the Beer Engine on Wedneday night to check. It WAS open! (I didn't go in though) Balls to 'em anyway. They don't deserve the custom anymore!

Just had a Call From Charles Graham of the Local paper (A loyal freind of the Bacon Grabbers...His daughter won the K.E.N in 05, sadly she couldn't make it this year to defend her title)...
The Beer Engine is closed...
No shock...But Age Concern turned up for a Dance there...Lots of Oldies, Entertainment etc...
But nobody at the pub!.
Except very dissapointed elder persons!
The story will be in the Paper...Mentioned this site...In fact if I can find an E-mail...I'll remind him!
Hello Charles!

It's a shame to see the Beer Engine finally close though. 14 years is a long time. The tragic thing about this is the new managers only took over in August. How could they let a pub get in that state in only three months?

Maybe a new owner will bring it back to life, Who knows!
(Pity we can't get it and turn it into Planet Comedy the Theme pub!)

Hmm... sounds like a 'dodgy character' to me.
In the words of Captain Mainwaring:
"A rough diamond that one... do anything too you - er, for you!"

Well it seems we've had the last of our meetings at The Beer Engine now, and sadly we won't get any more this year, but the good news is, we (The Bacon Grabbers) have been offered a room at a new venue. Just a few things to sort out first, then hopefully we'll back back on track in January 2007! There's also plans for a meeting in St. Helens too. All being well, we will be holding the Wigan Laurel & Hardy night at the 'Royal Oak' pub, Standishgate (Bottom of Wigan Lane)
